Student engagement in higher education has become the variable that separates programs that keep their students from those that quietly lose them. Engagement predicts the outcomes provosts and deans actually report on. In a study of 6,000 first-year students across 18 institutions, George Kuh and colleagues found that engagement had positive, statistically significant effects on both first-year grades and the odds a student returned for a second year, and the effect held across racial and ethnic groups.[2]
Retention is a revenue variable, not only an academic one. Every student who leaves takes tuition, fees, and future alumni support with them. Set that against the Lumina and Gallup finding that 32% of enrolled students considered stopping out in the past six months, with mental health and emotional stress cited most often.[3] Emotional engagement, the sense of belonging and connection, is exactly the dimension under pressure there.
What this means in practice: to move retention, engagement is the earliest lever you can pull, and it is visible long before a student formally withdraws.
DeVry University offers a clean test of the idea, because they measured it. DeVry looked at roughly 3,000 students taught by 50 professors who used Engageli's full feature set, comparing engaged sessions against standard delivery.[4]

Institutions see the effect quickly.
