Part 1: Putting the ROI in AI for Corporate Learning

Being the CMO of Engageli gives me the opportunity to connect with a great number of learning and development leaders - particularly during the emergence of AI - and here’s what I hear over and over again.

“I’m under pressure to leverage AI to scale out my team and improve efficiency.”

Or more specifically,

“I’m looking for an opportunity to leverage AI to create content.”

Let’s focus on the second challenge. Creating online learning content is a resource drain that can really hold you back from delivering timely and effective programs.

AI for interactive content creation

Research shows that it can take up to 280 hours to create just 1 hour of interactive, online training content. On the surface, 280 hours seems like a lot, but when you break it down, you’ll see this number isn’t inflated.

So, what goes into creating an hour of interactive content?

Here’s a breakdown of the 280 hours of production time needed to create 1 hour of finished interactive elearning content:

Time spend producing interactive content

You can’t just throw this at an AI robot. Most of this work can only be done by humans.  It requires your IP - your creativity and expertise.

  • You do the analysis - you understand who the learners are and what they need to learn.
  • You define objectives, map out the content, and choose the delivery method.
  • You create the materials that support learning, whether that's slides, videos, or interactive tools.

So where do AI tools come in?

You can see that AI tools are changing the game for video production and translation. Companies like Synthesia and TransPerfect are having a huge impact on video production and localization - scale and efficiency.  And yes, there are tools that can make content creation much more efficient too.

However, unchecked AI-generated content is obvious, off-putting, and untrustworthy. Sure, it’s smart to leverage AI when you’re creating content.  It streamlines the process. But, the content should still be created by you - the L&D expert. And if that’s the case, then what’s left for the robots?

A task fit for robots: automating interactive learning tasks

Creating interactive content is something robots can do. Knowing where and when to add interaction is your call, but once you’ve created your core content, AI-powered tools can analyze it and add interactions. It’s time-consuming work that can be automated to save you valuable time.

Time saved automating interactivity production

Let's take a real-world example. I recently had a discussion with a large manufacturer, and they shared their numbers around content creation with me. They generate about 500 hours of asynchronous training content per year. Their goal is to make 30% (3 of every 10 minutes of learning) interactive. To be conservative, they estimated that for each hour of asynchronous learning, it would take 40 hours (not 80 hours) of production time - to watch the video, chunk it into segments, write polls and quizzes, and integrate them into the video.

If you do the math, that’s 150 weeks of effort. Or 3 full-time people. Do you have 3 FTEs to dedicate to this? If not then, you’ll have to compromise. Cut back on the interactivity. Settle for less engagement and poorer learning outcomes.

Potential unlocked with AI

But what if you could automate this? Let the robots create the interactions to amplify what you’ve done! A conservative estimate of a 50% gain in efficiency through AI tools saves you 75 weeks of time. If you currently use an agency for interactivity development, that budget can be allocated to something else.  If this work is done in-house, then your time can be applied to more satisfying, higher-order work - or - maybe you can even go home on time once in a while!

Enter Engageli Studio

Engageli Studio is an exciting new AI tool that turns videos into active learning sessions. It’s AI magic that:

  1. Ingests videos and analyzes the content
  2. Isolates and extracts the transcript
  3. Identifies the pauses and logical breaks in the content
  4. Generates polls, quizzes and activities, and then
  5. Inserts them into where they belong in the video.

Then it passes the module on to you to review, edit (if desired), and enhance with additional assets like PowerPoint slides, PDFs, and videos. You can organize your modules into learning paths and publish to an on-demand environment that offers an AI tutor for assistance. Across each module, it captures completion and engagement metrics that AI analyzes, delivering active insight that improves engagement and outcomes.

Engageli Studio is a smart and productive tool that will save you time and help you get more value and better results from your intellectual property.

Try it free for one month to see how much time you can save making your training content interactive.
