Good student engagement measurement combines four kinds of data: verbal participation (talk time, question-asking, poll responses), non-verbal signals (reactions, camera use, hand raises, emoji responses), behavioral participation (chat, Q&A, notes, quiz completion), and attendance patterns (both live and asynchronous).

Student analytics is the use of data about learner behavior, performance, and engagement to improve educational outcomes. It breaks into three types depending on what the data is used for:

Salem-Keizer Public Schools provides a proof point. The student lifecycle,   onboarding, engagement, progress, retention, completion,  is one continuous journey, but most institutions analyze each stage with a different tool. That's where insight gets lost.

Five criteria that separate serious engagement analytics platforms from dashboards of meeting attendance.

1. Behavioral data, not survey data. The best engagement analytics capture what learners actually did, clicks, participation, timing,  not what they said in a post-session survey. Survey response rates collapse over time; behavioral data is always collected.
